The quarter inch seam allowance

Every cutting chart on this site adds ½″ to a finished size because each seam takes ¼″ from both pieces it joins. Sew 10 strips cut 1½″ wide into a row: it must measure exactly 10½″.

What 9 seams do

The top row is the cut width before sewing. The bottom row is the result after every join takes its allowance. Compare those two states before changing your machine setting: the difference belongs to the seams, not to a hidden scant value.

The first row is a true quarter inch seam. Every figure is arithmetic from the strip count and the seam width — the point is not any one number but how fast 0.031…″ per seam becomes 0.563…″ across a row.


What quilters mean by a scant quarter inch

A scant quarter inch is a seam sewn a thread or two narrower than a true quarter inch. The reasoning: the fold of the pressed seam and the thickness of the thread each swallow a little fabric, so a hair-narrower seam leaves the sewn piece measuring what the arithmetic promised. How much narrower? Published definitions do not agree on a number, and this site will not invent one. Sew the 10-strip test above instead — your own row tells you whether your quarter inch needs to shrink, and by how much.

What is a scant quarter inch?

A seam sewn a thread or two narrower than a true quarter inch, to give back the sliver of fabric the pressed fold and the thread itself take up. There is no agreed measurement for it — which is why the honest test is your own sewn row, not someone else's number.

How do I test my quarter inch seam?

With the test on this page: cut 10 strips 1½″ wide, sew them into a row, and measure. A true quarter inch gives exactly 10½″; anything else, and the calculator above turns your measurement into the exact depth your seam is running.

Why does my block shrink by the end of a row?

Because every seam repeats the same small error. A seam that runs a fraction deep loses that fraction twice — once from each piece it joins — and a row multiplies the loss by its seam count. The table above shows how fast it compounds; the fix is the seam, never the cutting.
